Blessings for Everyone! But Not for You?

Blessings for Everyone! But Not for You?

Hey guys! I hope you're having a great week. Today I just want to write a quick post about perspective. Lately I've been bothered over why God seems to be showering people around me with blessings, and some of them are so specific to things I may want or need yet He seems to freely give them to everyone around me! It feels like He's saying, "Not only am I not giving you that blessing, I'm gonna give it to someone who will tell you all about the amazing way I gave it to them!" Have you ever felt that way? It's like salt in a wound, right? But hang on, God could be testing us...

God is the owner of EVERYTHING, we all know that. What we don't take into consideration when we are feeling (let's be honest here) a little flustered over why God gave her this and gave him that and left you with nothing, is that He's already given us way more than we give Him credit for and far more than we deserve. Not only that, but we should be eager to bless Him and not concerned with what He's doing for us!

I decided to make a small list of things He has blessed me with to keep myself in check. I will continue to add to this list every time I feel a little overlooked when God rolls in the blessings bus and seems to pass by my house and then I will thank Him in prayer for all He HAS given me. I'll share a few of my blessings; you might find that you likely relate to some or most of this list.

I am blessed because I am/have:

  1. A Christian (and free to worship in the US)
  2. A wife, mother, daughter, sister, etc.
  3. Arms/Legs/Fingers/Toes
  4. A home/job/vehicles
  5. Freedoms of all sorts
  6. Health care
  7. Healthy foods of any variety I want
  8. Clean, running water
  9. Full closets / New stuff

As I was pouting about the recent blessing shower God had rained down on other people, my husband began to remind me of all we do have to be glad about. Here we were, driving in our car (it's old, but it's still a luxury most can't afford) to go see a movie (luxury) and I was planning to buy a popcorn (luxury) and I am complaining about not being blessed. You would think God would be fuming at me, just good and ready to teach me a lesson, but instead we get to the movies and out prints a ticket for a free popcorn with my husband's movie rewards card! Not only that, but a free pop too! God didn't knock me down and scream at me, He blessed me. Why? Psalm 103:13-14 (NIV) says, "As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust." God knows I'm just dust, and thankfully He is merciful and not vengeful. So even when I'm a big brat, He is kind and generous. That day He said to me, "Hey, the popcorn is mine and so is the pop so I'll give you one of each just so you will see that I haven't forgotten you, child." Who knew a little bag of popcorn could make a girl cry!

It's easy to let Satan rope you into complaining to God about what He hasn't done, but if we step back and look around, we will clearly see how very blessed we really are. He owes us nothing, but He gave us His Son, His love and so much more. We truly are blessed - even if we didn't get that thing we've really been wanting and someone else did. God might have something better ahead if you are faithful in your thankfulness, or He might just want to test how content really are with Him. This time I failed that test, but I'm glad God teaches us mercifully and I hope that next time I will use this lesson to bless Him with my thankful heart.

Great reminders! God KEEPS talking to be about focusing on having a heart of thankfulness vs. discontentment. Battlefield of the mind sometimes for sure! Amber Troutman Olafsson has a book about thankfulness, where you list like 1000 things to be thankful for. I have been wanting to read it! :) Great post & perspective!

Amen Jess!! I loved this little story, the enemy always wants us comparing and complaining about what we don't have, when all we have to do is look at what we DO have to get us out of the "pig pen". I have been there! I too can find myself saying: what about me? Instead of rejoicing when others are blessed, trying o remember what it felt like to receive a blessing and be excited for whoever it may be. Great reminder to stay thankful!!
